Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral that forms in banded layers, building up in concentric rings as mineral-rich solutions deposit in cavities over time. These polished pieces show warm brown, tan, and grey banding with the scalloped, botryoidal structure characteristic of the mineral, finished to a smooth glossy surface that brings out the internal layering. Note that rhodochrosite occurs in a range of colors, and these specimens show natural brown and grey banding rather than the pink coloring some varieties display. Each stone is finished individually, so the banding pattern differs from piece to piece.
