Galena Materials
Galena is lead sulfide (PbS), containing roughly 87% lead by weight, which is why it feels unusually heavy. It crystallizes in the cubic system, producing cube and octahedron shapes with perfect cleavage in three directions. It is soft, rating 2.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, and often occurs alongside silver, which historically made it valuable to mine. Major sources include the United States, Germany, England, and Peru.
Galena Safety & Care
- Galena contains lead. Wash your hands after handling, and do not handle it near food or food surfaces.
- Never lick, ingest, or place galena in water intended for drinking, and never make elixirs or infusions with it.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Clean with a soft dry brush only, and never wash galena in water, which can react with the surface and spread fine particles.
- Display in a stable spot; because it is soft and cleaves easily, handle over a soft surface to avoid chipping.
